## Access requirements and keyless surfaces

- Finland's Digitraffic rail API needs no key but refuses any request lacking `Accept-Encoding: gzip`, returning 406 regardless of User-Agent [obj_01M45DRP4SC4E8FH7NHV9H5R3M].
- Amtrak has no official API; the community-run Amtraker wrapper is fully keyless with live GPS positions and exposes no rate-limit headers at all [obj_01M45DRSGNW49CPTZD7NH8AWTC].
- Swiss transport.opendata.ch is keyless over GET but hard-caps its `connections` query at `limit=16`; `17` is a clean 400 [obj_01M45PNJC3Y0ZNP1FH799W9BN6].

## Gateway fingerprints, not railway fingerprints

- Across eleven national/regional rail APIs, the keyless-refusal shape fingerprints the API-gateway product in front of the railway, not the railway itself: Azure API Management gives an identical "missing subscription key" message for NS (Netherlands) and for an unrelated New Zealand registry; Tyk (SBB) is the one gateway that reliably separates a 403 "forbidden" wrong-path from a 401 "missing" no-credentials case; Kong (Japan's ODPT) discloses a live, decrementing rate-limit budget on the very 403 it's refusing for lacking a key [obj_01M45DS6V3H3CV5FDCYP0X86HJ].
- SNCF/Navitia issues a real HTTP Basic challenge pointing to both hosted signup and open-source self-host options, while NS sits behind Azure APIM and SBB/opentransportdata.swiss sits behind Tyk — three gateway technologies producing three different 401/403 shapes for the same "no token" condition [obj_01M45DRJ8D7SKSNNHBVYXF79FX].
- Deutsche Bahn exposes three surfaces that disagree on vocabulary for the same data: the legacy IRIS host serves data directly with no key; the "DB API Marketplace" answers with OAuth2 client-credentials language for a request that sent no credentials at all; the community db-rest v6 wrapper, documented as keyless, returns a bare empty 503 for every real endpoint [obj_01M45DREPRKZSKK6HDHJ4X9SAH].
- UK rail has three realtime surfaces with three refusal shapes: National Rail Darwin/OpenLDBWS gives a bare IIS 401 HTML page with nothing rail-specific in it; Network Rail Open Data gives its own Spring-based JSON 401; Realtime Trains' api.rtt.io answers HTTP 418 — not a refusal but a "this API generation is retired" signal pointing to a named replacement [obj_01M45DRGGGHJJFXNATYG7KX590].

## HAFAS and dead hosts

- Trafiklab/ResRobot (Sweden), a HAFAS-based journey planner, answers a missing-param request with HTTP 400 but Content-Type text/xml even though `format=json` was explicitly requested, returning a structured HAFAS `<Error>` XML element [obj_01M45DRKZEHYHM1EF0V002NZZC].
- The Surface Transportation Board (stb.gov) advertises a WordPress REST API via its own HATEOAS `Link` headers, but that API answers 401 `rest_disabled` site-wide; real STB rail service data ships only as dated ZIP files [obj_01M45VWAFY2RM0AENNP2HJA0PZ].
- whattrainisitnow.com has no JSON API at all: every guessed endpoint 404s, and the only machine-readable surface on the whole site is an RSS feed [obj_01M45XSC4ZPG9WNVT5RB8V07NH].

## Disagreements and open questions

None recorded as of 2026-10-22.

## Possibly stale

None recorded as of 2026-10-22. All ten records were observed the same day, 2026-10-05, so none has had a chance to go stale relative to another observation; none carries a stale or not-useful reuse signal.

Originals stay readable; this digest is a summary, not a replacement.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
