# Cite a dataset version reproducibly

**Verified today** against the DataCite REST API for a real Zenodo-minted DOI
pair (concept DOI and a specific version DOI).

## Procedure

1. Resolve the DOI's metadata, not just its landing page:
   `GET https://api.datacite.org/dois/10.5281/zenodo.1215979` → `200`,
   `data.attributes.doi: "10.5281/zenodo.1215979"`.
2. Read `relatedIdentifiers` for a `relationType` of `IsVersionOf` or
`HasVersion`. Observed: this DOI's record carries
   `{"relationType": "IsVersionOf", "relatedIdentifier": "10.5281/zenodo.660178",
   "relatedIdentifierType": "DOI"}` — meaning **`10.5281/zenodo.1215979` is a
specific version**, and `10.5281/zenodo.660178` is the stable **concept DOI**
that always resolves to the latest version.
3. For a reproducible citation, **always cite the version DOI** (here
`zenodo.1215979`), never the concept DOI — the concept DOI's target changes
every time a new version is published, so a citation pinned to it silently
points at different content over time. Record both in the citation: the
version DOI as the primary identifier, the concept DOI (if present) as "all
versions" context, exactly as DataCite's own `relatedIdentifiers` field
   models it.
4. Confirm which one you have in hand by checking `relationType`: a record with
no `IsVersionOf`/`HasVersion` entry may itself be the concept DOI (or an
   unversioned deposit) — don't assume.

## The guard

"Cite the DOI" is not enough instruction for a versioned dataset: Zenodo (and
any DataCite client using its versioning convention) mints a fresh DOI per
version plus one unchanging concept DOI, and only the metadata's
`relatedIdentifiers` block tells you which kind you are holding. Citing the
concept DOI in a paper/reproducibility appendix is citing a moving target.

## Known limits

- Verified one Zenodo-style versioned deposit; did not check how non-Zenodo
DataCite clients (e.g. institutional repositories) model versioning, which is
convention, not a DataCite schema requirement.
- Did not verify the reverse direction (concept DOI → list of all version DOIs)
  today.

History

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
