## Handle lookup and content negotiation
- doi.org's Handle API wraps every answer in a `responseCode` (1/100/200) that the outer HTTP status doesn't track uniformly: a real DOI is HTTP 200 with `responseCode:1`, while an unregistered suffix under a real prefix is HTTP 404 with a small well-formed JSON body [obj_01M45MKTP8A7NKPMYZCW6K0QKY].
- Content negotiation on doi.org uses a 302 (not 303) redirect to the Registration Agency; an unsupported Accept header ends in 406; an unknown DOI returns an HTML 404 even when JSON was requested [obj_01M3R85H2FTZ52WQRE72EJ9KJ1].
- The rendering behind that redirect differs by Registration Agency — Crossref, DataCite, and mEDRA each format citation-style responses differently for the same Accept headers [obj_01M45MKWEXP8ERZ5N75QZ3SCNH].
- A cross-cutting finding across resolvers built on the same underlying protocols shows "not found" signaled as a clean JSON 404, a raw HTML 500, or a 200 wrapping a diagnostic code, with no consistent shape [obj_01M45MP06WNJBFEWXAK4P6KCKQ].

## Retraction has no structured signal
- doi.org's redirect carries no retraction indicator at all, and the publisher's own landing page buries any notice in analytics JavaScript rather than metadata [obj_01M4RZ1VJEPRKTPYFMD18F8C95].
- Crossref's own record for a retracted paper carries no structured retraction field [obj_01M4RZ1EPGJ15N8VEMYDPGMXHR], and the Retraction-Watch-sourced `update-to` relation lives only on the retraction notice's record, not the retracted article's [obj_01M4RZ1J4T60AVYBM8XP17G1Q0].

## Preprint-to-published linking is asymmetric
- A published article's Crossref record reliably carries a reciprocal `has-preprint` relation back to its bioRxiv/medRxiv DOI [obj_01M4RZ22EVX3YKG43P2KHVXXT2], confirmed identically on medRxiv [obj_01M4RZ27XD85BWR53JFD38T01K] — but the preprint's own record carries an empty `relation`, with no forward pointer to the published version [obj_01M4RZ25PCCA3002C7PE18G3N2].

## Versioning and provenance
- Citing a dataset DOI reproducibly requires resolving metadata (not just the landing page) and checking `relatedIdentifiers` for an `IsVersionOf`/`HasVersion` relation to distinguish a concept DOI from a specific version DOI [obj_01M4RZ2864BE2M4SWAN9HW6J0M].
- Zenodo, OSF, and Dryad all resolve data-availability DOIs reliably but expose very different depths of provenance, and give identical response shapes for "never existed" versus "removed" [obj_01M4RZ2ZPB2KY9VTR0XC3GF7H2]. Zenodo's dataset metadata is open and licensed by default, with its DOI resolving through a dedicated `/doi/` landing path [obj_01M4RZ29S8K36AP5PDB7DX1RJG].

## Redirector infrastructure drifts quietly
- purl.org now 307-redirects every request, valid or not, to purl.archive.org, which alone does real 404 differentiation [obj_01M45MM6X9PAV0TKY0KQXZ446R]; w3id.org performs a fragment-stripping 301 followed by a content-negotiated 302 whose final Location changes with Accept [obj_01M45MM8P2HRR85HKT7DJF1K8J]. A cross-cutting finding notes legacy redirectors (PURL, ARK/n2t.net, w3id.org) have each been quietly re-platformed or gained extra hops, invisibly to anyone reading only their published specs [obj_01M45MP1WJS6WR2BA9929KTCZJ]. The ISSN-L table's "2014"-dated URL is still live and regenerated daily, not a static snapshot [obj_01M45MMDVKEEA9ZWQ3J216565T].

## Rate limits, paging, and related resolvers
- Crossref's REST API raises its rate limit for requests in the "polite pool" (a mailto param or User-Agent), and deep paging must use a cursor rather than an offset [obj_01M3QYMV53ZPNK3GTY9DB0FWT9].
- NCBI's PMC ID Converter moved hosts, now requires a mandatory/homogeneous idtype (no auto-detected mixed PMID/PMCID/DOI), and enforces a 200-id cap [obj_01M45MMHBRK545JPM36FBNCKNF].
- Resolving an institution name to a ROR identifier requires not trusting the top search hit [obj_01M4RZ2XFK5ZHZ5S4VY56T6VW4].

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
