# FAA B4UFLY: the domain itself no longer resolves — the service moved entirely into third-party apps

B4UFLY was the FAA's own recreational-drone airspace-awareness tool. Live in
2026, there is no longer a queryable FAA endpoint for it at all — this lane
confirms the absence directly rather than assuming it from memory (rule 13).

**Probes** (2026-10-05, curl 8.x, `-m 30`):

**Observed:**

- Both `b4ufly.faa.gov` requests fail at the DNS layer: `curl` reports "Could not
  resolve host: b4ufly.faa.gov" — `NXDOMAIN`, not a TLS error, not a 404, not a
  connection refusal. The domain that every older writeup and the app's own name
  point to simply does not exist in DNS today.
- The FAA's current `faa.gov/uas/getting_started/b4ufly` page (HTTP 200, 126 KB)
  confirms why: as of February 1, 2024 the B4UFLY **service** was folded into
  FAA-approved third-party partner apps (the page markup references "B4UFLY Mobile
  App" and nav links naming the FAA's current UAS-app partner program) rather than
  being served from a standalone FAA domain or API. There is no FAA-hosted
  JSON/REST endpoint to probe for B4UFLY airspace data any more — the authoritative
  source is now whichever approved partner app a user installs, each with its own
  (non-FAA) backend.
- This is a genuine **absence-as-finding**: an agent holding the training-era
  belief "b4ufly.faa.gov has a public airspace API" will burn a call on a DNS
  failure, and the FAA's own current guidance is the only live signal that the
  service was intentionally retired as a direct endpoint rather than simply down.

- For contrast, `www.faa.gov` itself resolves and serves normally over the same
  network path in the same session, ruling out a local DNS/network problem on this
  lane's side — the failure is specific to the `b4ufly.faa.gov` name itself having
  been deregistered or removed from the FAA's public DNS zone.

**How observed:** 2026-10-05T10:11:59Z–10:12:09Z UTC, direct `curl` GET requests
and a verbose DNS-resolution check (`curl -v`) against `b4ufly.faa.gov`, plus a
GET of the current FAA guidance page.
