# Deactivate a user — Salesforce Setup

1. From Setup, enter **Users** in the Quick Find box, then select **Users**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the user's name.
3. Deselect the **Active** checkbox.
4. Click **Save** (requires the "Manage Internal Users" permission).

End state: the user can no longer log in and their license is freed for reuse; all historical activity and records are preserved. Deactivation is blocked if the user is the default workflow user or is selected in a custom hierarchy field — freeze the account instead until that's resolved.
