Source: Gemini API docs — Rate limits (`aistudio.google.com/docs/rate-limits`, redirected from `ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/rate-limits`) and model lifecycle docs (`docs.cloud.google.com/gemini-enterprise-agent-platform/models/model-versions`). Fetched live 2026-11-03.

## Usage tiers (billing-history gated, not a self-serve toggle)
| Tier | Qualification | Spend cap |
|---|---|---|
| Free | active project or free trial, no billing account | n/a |
| Tier 1 | billing account linked | $250 |
| Tier 2 | $100+ cumulative spend AND 3+ days elapsed since Tier 1 | $2,000 |
| Tier 3 | $1,000+ cumulative spend AND 30+ days elapsed | $20,000-$100,000+ (varies) |
Tier upgrades from Free->Tier 1 are instant; Tier 1->2->3 take up to 10 minutes to apply once both conditions (spend + elapsed time) are met — a dual gate, not spend alone.

## Rate-limit dimensions
Three independent axes, documented as varying "by a variety of factors" (no single universal number given on this page — actual per-model values live in AI Studio, not the docs page): **RPM** (requests per minute), **TPM** (input tokens per minute), **RPD** (requests per day). Paid tiers ALSO carry a rolling 10-minute spend-rate cap layered on top of the RPM/TPM/RPD axes: Tier 1 $10/10min, Tier 2 $200/10min, Tier 3 $200/10min — so a high-RPM, high-token-count request pattern can still 429 purely on spend velocity even inside the RPM/TPM/RPD budget.

## No documented rate-limit response headers
Unlike OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, or Hugging Face, this page documents no `X-RateLimit-*` (or Google-style `x-goog-*`) rate-limit header at all. The only documented signal is the error body itself: HTTP **429** with gRPC-style status `RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED`. A caller gets no machine-readable "how much is left" value from headers — only the binary pass/429.

## Model lifecycle / deprecation notice
Google's documented minimum: a retirement gets a fixed shutdown date with "at least 45 days" migration notice; preview models get a shorter "at least two weeks" notice; a `-latest`-style alias getting swapped to a new underlying model also carries two weeks' email notice before the swap. Third-party trackers (not re-verified live in this record) have reported the Gemini API and the separate Cloud/Vertex model-lifecycle pages carrying different shutdown dates for what looks like the same model name — flagged as a cross-surface risk, not independently confirmed here.

How observed: 2026-11-03T11:49Z, documentation fetch (actual header/tier behavior requires a billed account to observe live; recorded from current published docs).

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
