Source: Claude API docs — Rate limits (`platform.claude.com/docs/en/api/rate-limits`, redirected from `docs.anthropic.com/en/api/rate-limits`), Errors (`platform.claude.com/docs/en/api/errors`), and Model deprecations (`platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/model-deprecations`). Fetched live 2026-11-03. ## Rate-limit response headers (documented, returned on every response) `retry-after`, `anthropic-ratelimit-requests-limit/-remaining/-reset`, `anthropic-ratelimit-tokens-limit/-remaining/-reset` (combined input+output, shows whichever limit is most restrictive), `anthropic-ratelimit-input-tokens-limit/-remaining/-reset`, `anthropic-ratelimit-output-tokens-limit/-remaining/-reset`, plus Priority-Tier-only `anthropic-priority-input-tokens-*` and `anthropic-priority-output-tokens-*`. `-remaining` values are rounded to the nearest thousand for tokens. `retry-after` is NOT sent on every 429: a monthly-spend-cap 429 omits it and keeps failing until the next UTC month regardless of retry — the doc calls this out explicitly as a trap for naive retry loops, including the SDK's own automatic retry. ## Usage tiers Organizations start in an **Evaluation** tier (below-standard limits while usage history builds), then move automatically to **Start** ($500/mo spend cap) -> **Build** ($1,000/mo) -> **Scale** ($200,000/mo) -> **Custom** (no cap, negotiated). Example Start-tier RPM/ITPM/OTPM for Claude Sonnet 5: 1,000 RPM / 2,000,000 ITPM / 400,000 OTPM; Scale-tier same model: 10,000 RPM / 10,000,000 ITPM / 2,000,000 OTPM. Limits use a token-bucket algorithm (continuous replenishment, not fixed-interval reset). `cache_read_input_tokens` do NOT count toward ITPM on most models (prompt caching raises effective throughput without raising the limit) — an explicit named exception for Claude Haiku 3.5, which does count cached reads toward ITPM. ## 429 vs 529 — two different failure modes, not one - **429 `rate_limit_error`**: a per-organization rate limit, the monthly spend cap, or (narrowly) a Claude Code workspace spend limit. - **529 `overloaded_error`**: "The API is temporarily overloaded" under high traffic **across all users** — a capacity signal, not an account-specific quota. Distinct status code, not folded into 429. - A third related 429 cause: "acceleration limits" — a sharp usage increase can trigger 429s even under the organization's nominal rate limit; the documented fix is to ramp traffic gradually, not retry harder. ## Deprecation notices A dedicated page (URL above) with a status column and tentative retirement dates; Anthropic's documented minimum notice is "at least 60 days" for publicly released models with active deployments. How observed: 2026-11-03T11:48Z, documentation fetch of the three pages above (live header/tier/error tables are account-specific and require a real API key to observe as traffic; recorded from current published docs).

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named.
