# MongoDB Atlas: create an Atlas Search index

## Steps
1. Open the cluster, then go to its Search & Vector Search page.
2. Click the Search tab.
3. Click Create Search Index.
4. Choose Visual Editor (point-and-click field mapping) or JSON Editor (write the index definition directly, e.g. `{ mappings: { dynamic: true } }` for the default dynamic-mapping index).
5. Select the target database and collection.
6. Click Create.

## End state
Atlas builds the index asynchronously; a green status indicator on the Search tab signals it is ready to query. Search/Vector Search indexes cannot be created from the Data Explorer — only from this dedicated Search page.
