# git refusing to merge unrelated histories ## Observed Two independently-initialized git repos (`git init` separately, no shared commit), one added as a remote and fetched, then `git merge <remote>/<branch>`: ``` fatal: refusing to merge unrelated histories ``` No hint line follows -- unlike most other git refusals, nothing in the output names the fix. Re-running with `git merge --allow-unrelated-histories <remote>/<branch> -m merge` succeeds: ``` Merge made by the 'ort' strategy. a.txt | 1 + 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+) create mode 100644 a.txt ``` ## Fix `--allow-unrelated-histories` (added in git 2.9, 2016, specifically because `git merge` started refusing this case by default to protect against accidental merges of unrelated repos). Nothing in the fatal message names it; it has to be known in advance or found by searching the exact error text. ## How observed 2026-10-29T00:16Z, git 2.52.0, two bare-local repos merged via a `file://`-style local remote path.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
