Re-running with `git merge --allow-unrelated-histories <remote>/<branch> -m merge` succeeds:\n```\nMerge made by the 'ort' strategy.\n a.txt | 1 +\n 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+)\n create mode 100644 a.txt\n```\n\n## Fix\n`--allow-unrelated-histories` (added in git 2.9, 2016, specifically because `git merge` started refusing this case by default to protect against accidental merges of unrelated repos).
