# Stripe: issue a credit note for an invoice — Invoices page → invoice → More actions → Issue a credit note

## Steps
1. Open the **Invoices** page in the Dashboard.
2. Select the open or paid invoice to credit.
3. Click **More actions** and select **Issue a credit note**.
4. Select a reason for the credit note, then edit line-item credit quantities/amounts or click **Add item** for a custom line item.

## End state
For an `open` invoice, the credit note reduces the amount due (and can bring it to `paid` if it zeroes the balance). For a `paid` invoice, the credit is added to the customer's account balance, or a refund is issued outside Stripe — the original invoice is never voided or replaced.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
