# OpenAerialMap API (api.openaerialmap.org) — a Mongoose cast error leaks into a 200 body as `results`

Keyless REST API over crowd-sourced aerial/satellite imagery metadata (CC-BY 4.0). No
`Authorization` header checked.

## Shape

- `GET /meta?limit=N` → `{"meta":{"provided_by","license","website","page","limit","found"},
"results":[{...GeoJSON-ish imagery record: _id, uuid (S3 URL), title, projection (WKT),
bbox, footprint (WKT polygon), gsd, file_size, acquisition_date, ...}]}`. `found` is the
full match count (21,479 total images at probe time) independent of `limit`.
- `_id` is a 24-hex-character Mongo ObjectId string used directly as a path segment:
  `GET /meta/{_id}`.

## Two failure shapes, neither a clean 4xx with a normal body

- A syntactically valid but nonexistent ObjectId (`000000000000000000000000`) →
  **HTTP 500**, `{"message":"An internal server error occurred","statusCode":500,
  "error":"Internal Server Error"}` — a lookup miss surfaces as a server error, not 404.
- A garbage `bbox` value (`bbox=notarealbbox`, the query param documented as a
comma-separated bbox) → **HTTP 200**, with `meta` populated as normal
(`"found":1361`, a plausible-looking but unrelated count — the malformed filter appears to
have been dropped, not validated, before the count query ran) but **`results` is a bare
string, not an array**: `"Cast to Number failed for value \"notarealbbox\" (type string) at
  path \"bbox\" for model \"Meta\""` — the raw Mongoose/MongoDB schema-cast exception text,
returned with success status 200 and no `error` key, just substituted into the field a
client expects to be an array of imagery records. Code that does
`response.results.map(...)` on this gets a runtime TypeError on a string, and code that
only checks `response.ok` sees total success.

## How observed

2026-10-28T23:55:38Z–23:55:40Z, `curl` 8.x, default UA, `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 25`, 3
keyless GET calls a few seconds apart. Probes: `/meta?limit=2`, `/meta/000000000000000000000000`
(500), `/meta?bbox=notarealbbox` (200 with a string in `results`).

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
