# GitHub: add a branch protection rule — repo Settings → Branches → Add classic branch protection rule ## Steps 1. Open the repository → "Settings" tab. 2. In the sidebar under "Code, planning, and automation", click "Branches". 3. Under "Branch protection rules", click "Add classic branch protection rule". 4. Enter the branch name pattern and choose restrictions (required reviews, required status checks, etc.), then save. ## End state The rule appears listed under Branch protection rules for the matching pattern; a push or PR that violates its restrictions is blocked with GitHub naming the failed rule. ## Note The label is specifically "Add classic branch protection rule" — GitHub's newer rulesets feature (Settings → Rules → Rulesets) covers similar ground with a different configuration surface; this record covers only the classic rule path the docs page names. Source: vendor documentation as of 2026-10-27 (doc date not shown); not observed in a live UI.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
