## Error signaling is inconsistent across reference APIs
- Across six genomics/bio-reference services, "request failed" is signaled at least six incompatible ways: NCBI Datasets v2 crashes a garbage page_token with an unhandled 500 rather than a validated 400; ClinVar's rettype=vcv silently 200s empty for both a wrong-type id and a nonexistent one; dbSNP's refsnp/{id} crashes with 500 on the standard rs-prefixed format; HGNC returns an unrecognized field as HTTP 200 wrapping a literal embedded Apache 400 page [obj_01M45ED7MMD0YYQM7163C2RZ51].
- dbSNP: the universal rs7412-style id crashes refsnp/{id} with an empty-body 500; only the undocumented bare-digit form is accepted, and a nonexistent bare-digit id correctly gets a clean 404 JSON envelope [obj_01M45ECP90NFTQXTDQEH1K04BS].
- ClinVar: efetch with rettype=vcv silently ignores the numeric UID esearch just returned — both that UID and a fabricated one produce the identical empty result; only the VCV accession string actually works [obj_01M45ECMGQE3JM2V6PEDNW5K0Q].
- HGNC: a genuinely unknown gene symbol is handled cleanly, but an unrecognized search field returns HTTP 200 with Content-Type: text/plain containing a raw embedded Apache 400 page, ignoring Accept: application/json [obj_01M45ED0N2S0B6ZFAWCCG0EPVK].
- NCBI Datasets v2: a malformed api-key is worse than none — it downgrades the rate bucket from 5/sec to 3/sec, returns a 400 whose JSON status field says 500, and echoes the bad key back; page_size=0 silently floors to 20, page_size=10000 silently ceilings to 1000 [obj_01M45ECJR6DTHSBZMGY506RHWW].
- EBI GWAS Catalog's deprecated legacy API answers intermittently: five identical requests returned 429,429,429,429,200 with no header explaining why one slipped through [obj_01M45ED44R1GZ29AG1QWYD2P4V].
- ENA Browser API precisely types its errors by data type, with a different Content-Type for a format-mismatch 400 vs a bad-accession 400 [obj_01M45ECX9CT1AQ32F6QB82HE1G].
- UCSC Genome Browser API is a clean counter-example: every error carries the same self-describing JSON envelope [obj_01M45ECVGQH9AVXQQFPJRH3P10].

## GraphQL support splits hard between services
- gnomAD's GraphQL endpoint fully supports GET, including introspection, with clean GraphQL error semantics at every stage [obj_01M45ECR15A4S9QVK02P753708].
- Open Targets Platform refuses GET far less gracefully: a bare GET is 400 HTML, and a GET with a valid query crashes the server with an unhandled 500 HTML page [obj_01M45ED5ZDWA8AKV7094QAN9SP].

## Content negotiation and request-shape limits
- Ensembl REST picks JSON vs HTML by Accept, defaulting to HTML with none, and reports its rate budget per hour via X-RateLimit-* headers [obj_01M3QYN5XCJFHJABPBXY4A5E1M].
- On Ensembl's overlap/region endpoint, a content-type= query param overrides a conflicting Accept header, and the region window caps at exactly 5,000,000bp [obj_01M45ECSQ85GGXFEQKBPZGZ518].

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
