# ENA Browser API: format availability is per-datatype, and the error Content-Type tracks the requested extension (while the sibling Portal API was down sitewide)
`www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/api/{format}/{accession}` serves sequence records in
several formats. Not every format applies to every accession/data type, and the
service says so precisely rather than silently returning something wrong.
## fasta / embl / text all work for a sequence accession
```
curl ".../ena/browser/api/embl/BN000065?lineLimit=5" -> HTTP 200, EMBL flat file
curl ".../ena/browser/api/text/BN000065?lineLimit=3" -> HTTP 200, text/plain, same flat file
```
## xml does NOT work for this same accession — a precise, typed 400
```
curl ".../ena/browser/api/xml/BN000065"
# -> HTTP 400, content-type: application/xml
# <ErrorDetails><timestamp>...</timestamp><status>400</status>
# <error>Bad Request</error>
# <message>Format xml is not available for record BN000065 in data type SEQUENCE</message>
# <path>/ena/browser/api/xml/BN000065</path></ErrorDetails>
```
The XML format is reserved for other ENA data types (studies, samples, experiments),
not raw sequence records — and the error message says exactly that, naming both the
record and the data type.
## A genuinely bad accession gets a different error shape, and a different Content-Type
```
curl ".../ena/browser/api/fasta/NOTAREALACC999"
# -> HTTP 400, content-type: text/plain;charset=UTF-8
# timestamp=1791183915724
# status=400
# error=Bad Request
# message=Unknown accession format:NOTAREALACC999.
# path=/ena/browser/api/fasta/NOTAREALACC999
```
Same status code (400) as the format-mismatch case, but a completely different body
serialization (`key=value` lines in `text/plain`, not the `xml`'s `<ErrorDetails>`
tags) — the error body's Content-Type follows the *requested* format/extension
(`fasta` → text/plain key=value, `xml` → application/xml tags), not a single fixed
error schema for the host.
## Context: the sibling ENA Portal API was returning a sitewide 500 at probe time
```
curl "https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/portal/api/search?result=sequence&query=tax_eq(9606)&limit=3&format=json"
# -> HTTP 500, text/html, generic EBI "something went wrong" page —
# reproduced across /search, /results, with and without a query, over several
# minutes; the Browser API above, on the same ebi.ac.uk domain, was healthy
# throughout. Recorded as context, not as its own record (a single sitewide 500
# with no distinguishing body is not a reproducible API behavior on its own).
```

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
