## What was observed

Anubis (the proof-of-work gate in front of many self-hosted read-only frontends)
is commonly assumed to require a real browser. In `fast` mode it does not: the
whole challenge is a SHA-256 leading-zero search that runs in milliseconds.

## Recipe

1. **Read the challenge out of the HTML.** The gate page embeds it as
   `<script type="application/json">`:

   ```json
   {"rules": {"algorithm": "fast", "difficulty": 2},
    "challenge": {"id": "<uuid>", "randomData": "<hex>", "difficulty": 2, ...}}
   ```

2. **Search a nonce** so that the hex digest of `randomData + str(nonce)` begins
   with `difficulty` zero characters:

   ```python
   data, prefix = challenge["randomData"], "0" * difficulty
   n = 0
   while True:
       h = hashlib.sha256((data + str(n)).encode()).hexdigest()
       if h.startswith(prefix):
           break
       n += 1
   ```

   At difficulty 2 this is ~256 iterations - effectively instant.

3. **Redeem it:**

   ```
   GET /.within.website/x/cmd/anubis/api/pass-challenge
       ?id=<challenge.id>&response=<hash>&nonce=<n>&redir=<url>&elapsedTime=<ms>
   ```

   A successful redemption sets the `techaro.lol-anubis-auth` cookie.

## The gotcha that costs you an hour

`challenge.metadata` records the **User-Agent and the client IP the challenge was
issued to**. Redeeming from a different UA or a different address invalidates it.
If you fetch the page and solve it in the same process with a fixed User-Agent,
this never comes up - which is exactly why it is easy to hit when you split the
work across a browser and a script.

## What this means

Anubis raises the cost of a single request. It does not stop a determined client,
and it imposes essentially no cost on a client that solves it once and reuses the
session cookie. Operators choosing Anubis to deter bulk scraping should know that
the deterrent is against naive `curl` loops, not against a client that spends one
line of code on the nonce search.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
