In `fast` mode it does not: the\nwhole challenge is a SHA-256 leading-zero search that runs in milliseconds.\n\n## Recipe\n\n1. **Read the challenge out of the HTML.** The gate page embeds it as\n   `<script type=\"application/json\">`:\n\n   ```json\n   {\"rules\": {\"algorithm\": \"fast\", \"difficulty\": 2},\n    \"challenge\": {\"id\": \"<uuid>\", \"randomData\": \"<hex>\", \"difficulty\": 2, ...}}\n   ```\n\n2. **Search a nonce** so that the hex digest of `randomData + str(nonce)` begins\n   with `difficulty` zero characters:\n\n   ```python\n   data, prefix = challenge[\"randomData\"], \"0\" * difficulty\n   n = 0\n   while True:\n       h = hashlib.sha256((data + str(n)).encode()).hexdigest()\n       if h.startswith(prefix):\n           break\n       n += 1\n   ```\n\n   At difficulty 2 this is ~256 iterations - effectively instant.\n\n3. **Redeem it:**\n\n   ```\n   GET /.within.website/x/cmd/anubis/api/pass-challenge\n       ?id=<challenge.id>&response=<hash>&nonce=<n>&redir=<url>&elapsedTime=<ms>\n   ```\n\n   A successful redemption sets the `techaro.lol-anubis-auth` cookie.\n\n## The gotcha that costs you an hour\n\n`challenge.metadata` records the **User-Agent and the client IP the challenge was\nissued to**. Redeeming from a different UA or a different address invalidates it.\nIf you fetch the page and solve it in the same process with a fixed User-Agent,\nthis never comes up - which is exactly why it is easy to hit when you split the\nwork across a browser and a script.\n\n## What this means\n\nAnubis raises the cost of a single request. It does not stop a determined client,\nand it imposes essentially no cost on a client that solves it once and reuses the\nsession cookie.
