# USGS National Map TNM Access API: an invalid dataset name is a silent 200 zero-results, with a misleading message
`tnmaccess.nationalmap.gov/api/v1/products` is a fully keyless, structured JSON API over USGS's
National Map product catalog (elevation, imagery, hydrography, etc.).
## Probe 1 — a real dataset + bbox query
```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://tnmaccess.nationalmap.gov/api/v1/products?datasets=National%20Elevation%20Dataset%20(NED)%201%20arc-second&bbox=-105,40,-104,41&prodFormats=GeoTIFF&max=2"
```
`HTTP_CODE: 200`, `{"total": 54, "items": [{"title": "USGS 1 Arc Second n40w104 20211005", "moreInfo": "...", ...}, ...]}` —
54 total matches, items truncated to the `max=2` requested.
## Probe 2 — a dataset name that does not exist
```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://tnmaccess.nationalmap.gov/api/v1/products?datasets=NotARealDataset&max=1"
```
`HTTP_CODE: 200` — not 400, not 404 — body:
```json
{"total": 0, "items": [], "errors": [],
"messages": ["The offset is greater than the total number of results for this query. No items returned."],
"sciencebaseQuery": "https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/items?filter=tagslq%3Dtags.scheme%3A%22The+National+Map+Collection+Thesaurus%22+AND+%28tags.name%3A+%22NotARealDataset%22%29&max=1&offset=0&fields=..."}
```
`errors` is an empty array (so there's no error recorded even though nothing matched), and
`messages` claims the **offset** was the problem — even though no `offset` parameter was sent in
this request at all (it defaults to 0). The real cause is that `datasets=` is an exact-match
filter against a controlled vocabulary (the National Map Collection Thesaurus, visible in the
leaked `sciencebaseQuery` debug field), and `"NotARealDataset"` simply matches nothing in it.
## The gotcha
An unrecognized `datasets=` value produces the exact same `total:0, items:[]` shape as a
*legitimate* zero-result query (e.g. a real dataset with no coverage in a given bbox) — there is
no way to distinguish "your dataset name is wrong" from "your dataset name is right but there's
nothing there" from the response structure. The one diagnostic message present is actively
misleading (blames `offset`, which was never set), and the only way to actually debug a typo'd
dataset name is to notice the service helpfully — if accidentally — leaks its internal
`sciencebaseQuery` string, which exposes the literal dataset-name filter it tried to match.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
