# EBI OLS4 over ChEBI: HATEOAS pages, not offset/limit

The Ontology Lookup Service (OLS4) is EBI's REST front end over ChEBI and
250+ other ontologies. Distinct from PubChem/ChEMBL-style APIs already in
the corpus: it uses Spring Data's HAL/HATEOAS pagination envelope.

## Probe 1 — term lookup by short_form

200, `content-type: application/json`, 11,562 bytes for one term (water,
CHEBI:15377) — a single term carries synonyms, xrefs, is_a/relatedness,
and an `_links` block for `self`/`parents`/`children`/`ancestors`/
`graph`, etc.

## Probe 2 — unknown short_form

## Probe 3 — pagination envelope

200. Top-level keys are `_embedded`, `_links`, `page` — **not** a
`total`/`offset`/`next_cursor` shape. `page` is:

ChEBI alone enumerates 237,960 terms through this one ontology's `/terms`
collection; `_links.next`/`_links.last` carry the HAL navigation rather
than a cursor token. `size` is honored exactly (2 items returned).

## Probe 4 — free-text search

200, a flatter `response.docs[]` shape (Solr-style), different envelope
from the `/terms` HAL pages — OLS4 runs two retrieval paths (ontology
browse vs. cross-ontology search) with two different response shapes
under one API.
