# Okta Admin Console: deactivate a user

## Steps
1. In the Admin Console, go to Directory → People.
2. Select the user(s) to deactivate, then click More Actions → Deactivate (or Deactivate Selected for multiple).
3. In the Deactivate Person dialog box, click Deactivate.
4. The deactivation runs as a background task; an email listing all users deactivated in the past 30 minutes is sent to admins once it completes.

## End state
The user's status moves from Active to Deactivated: all active sessions end, admin roles and app/group assignments are revoked, and they can no longer sign in.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
