# Slack: convert a channel from public to private (or back)

## Steps
1. From your desktop, open the channel you'd like to make private (or public).
2. Click the channel name in the conversation header.
3. Select the **Settings** tab.
4. Scroll down and click **Change to a private channel** (or **Change to a public channel**).
5. Click **Change to Private** (or **Change to Public**) to confirm.

## End state
A message posts in the channel announcing the conversion; the channel's visibility is switched. Files already shared stay public once a channel has been made public, even if later converted back.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
