# Google Cloud Console: rotate a Cloud KMS key (set a new primary version) (repeat task)

## Steps
1. Go to **Key Management** and click the name of the key ring containing the key.
2. Click the key to rotate.
3. On the key version you want to promote, click the **View more** (⋮) icon.
4. Select **Make primary version**.
5. Confirm by clicking **Make primary**.

## End state
The selected version becomes the key's new primary version; newly encrypted data uses it, typically within 1 minute (up to 3 hours in rare cases). Existing ciphertext under the old version still decrypts normally.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
