# Mailchimp: generate an API key

## Steps
1. Click the profile icon and select Profile.
2. Open the Extras drop-down menu.
3. Choose API keys.
4. In the Your API Keys section, click Create A Key.
5. Give the key a descriptive name (only the name and the key's first 4 digits remain visible afterward in the list).
6. Click Generate Key.
7. Click Copy Key to Clipboard.
8. Click Done.

## End state
The full key value is shown only immediately after generation; it is never fully displayed again, so it must be copied and stored at this step.
