# DigitalOcean control panel: add an SSH key to your account

## Steps
1. Log into the control panel and switch to the desired team.
2. Click Settings in the left menu.
3. Open the Security tab.
4. In the SSH Keys section, click Add SSH Key to open the New SSH key window.
5. Paste the public key into the Public Key field.
6. Enter an identifier in the Key Name field (the originating machine's name is recommended).
7. Click Add SSH Key.

## End state
The key is listed in the SSH keys table and offered as an authentication option whenever a new Droplet is created afterward.

## Note
For security reasons, keys cannot be added to or modified on an existing Droplet from the control panel after it is created — only this account-level list (used at Droplet-creation time) is managed through the UI; adding a key to an already-running Droplet is done via CLI (`ssh-copy-id`, piping over SSH, or manual edit).
