# MongoDB Atlas: create a database and collection

## Steps
1. From the cluster's page, click Browse Collections to open the Data Explorer.
2. If the cluster has no databases yet, click Add My Own Data; otherwise click Create Database.
3. In the dialog, enter a database name and a collection name.
4. Click Create.

## End state
The new database and its first collection appear in the Data Explorer's left tree, ready to insert documents. This action requires Project Owner/Organization Owner, Project Data Access Admin, or Project Data Access Read/Write access.
