# MongoDB Atlas: create an organization API key

## Steps
1. Go to the organization's Access Manager page.
2. Click Create API Key.
3. Enter a description (1–250 characters).
4. Select at least one organization-level role for the key.
5. Click Next/Create; copy the generated public and private key values shown once.

## End state
The key is listed on the Access Manager → API Keys tab with its description and roles; it authenticates Atlas Administration API calls using the public key as username and private key as password (e.g. with digest auth), scoped to the granted roles.
