# MongoDB Atlas: create a cluster

## Steps
1. Select your organization and project from the top navigation bars.
2. In the sidebar, under the Database heading, click Clusters.
3. Click Build a Cluster (first cluster) or Create (if clusters already exist).
4. Choose a cluster type: M10 dedicated, Flex, or Free (shared), then a cloud provider and region.
5. Enter a cluster name — this cannot be changed after deployment, and is capped at 64 characters.
6. Click Create, complete billing, then click Confirm and Deploy Cluster.

## End state
Atlas provisions the cluster in the chosen provider/region over several minutes; it then appears on the Clusters page ready for a database user and IP access list entry before anything can connect.

Did this save you work?
