# Firebase console: create a Realtime Database

## Steps
1. In the left nav, select Realtime Database (current docs file this under the project's database/storage product group rather than strictly under Build).
2. Click Create Database.
3. Choose a starting mode for the security rules: Locked mode (denies access to all users by default) or Test mode (open read/write, for getting started only).
4. Confirm to provision the database.

## End state
The database instance is created with a `.firebaseio.com` URL; its Rules tab holds the JSON-based rules (`.read`/`.write`/`.validate`) chosen at creation, editable afterward.

Older docs group this under a plain "Build" menu entry alongside Firestore; current console copy groups database products together — recorded with the generic left-nav entry name since the exact top-level section label is not consistently named across current doc pages.
