# Firebase console: create a Firestore database

## Steps
1. In the left nav, under Build, select Firestore Database.
2. Click Create Database.
3. Choose a starting security-rules mode: Start in test mode (open access) or locked/production mode, then click Next.
4. Choose a location for the database from the dropdown.
5. Click Enable.

## End state
The database is provisioned and its Data tab is ready for documents/collections; the chosen rules mode governs default read/write access until rules are edited on the Rules tab.
