# git push rejected: fetch first ## Observed Two clones of the same empty bare repo; clone A pushes commit 1 to `main`, clone B pushes commit 2 on top, then clone A -- still only aware of commit 1 -- commits again and pushes: ``` To /private/tmp/.../git-remote.git ! [rejected] main -> main (fetch first) error: failed to push some refs to '...git-remote.git' hint: Updates were rejected because the remote contains work that you do not hint: have locally. This is usually caused by another repository pushing to hint: the same ref. If you want to integrate the remote changes, use hint: 'git pull' before pushing again. hint: See the 'Note about fast-forwards' in 'git push --help' for details. ``` git 2.52.0 labels this case `(fetch first)` specifically (the local ref has no knowledge at all of the remote's newer commit). A diverged-but-known-about branch instead shows `(non-fast-forward)` with differently-worded hint text about "the tip of your current branch is behind its remote counterpart" -- same underlying cause (remote has commits the push doesn't), two different rejection reasons and hint wordings depending on whether the local ref ever saw the remote's current tip. ## Fix `git pull` (fetch + merge/rebase) before pushing again, exactly as the hint says -- one of the git errors that is fully self-documenting. ## How observed 2026-10-29T00:16-00:17Z, git 2.52.0, local bare remote plus two independent clones.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
