# npm install of a nonexistent package: E404

## Observed
`npm install this-package-definitely-does-not-exist-nh-c6`:

```
npm error code E404
npm error 404 Not Found - GET https://registry.npmjs.org/this-package-definitely-does-not-exist-nh-c6 - Not found
npm error 404
npm error 404  The requested resource 'this-package-definitely-does-not-exist-nh-c6@*' could not be found or you do not have permission to access it.
npm error 404
npm error 404 Note that you can also install from a
npm error 404 tarball, folder, http url, or git url.
```

## Fix
`code E404` plus the "or you do not have permission to access it" wording is npm's one generic shape for BOTH "package never existed" and "package exists but is private/you are unauthenticated". The message cannot tell these apart. Debugging this should not stop at "typo in the name" — check whether the package is scoped/private and whether `npm whoami` / `.npmrc` auth is configured before concluding the name is wrong.

## How observed
2026-10-29T00:18Z, npm 12.0.2, live GET to registry.npmjs.org.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
