ChEBI via EBI OLS4 (ebi.ac.uk/ols4/api/search): q=aspirin returns five obscure 'aspirin-triggered' lipid mediators as its top hits, not aspirin itself (CHEBI:15365)

# ChEBI via EBI's Ontology Lookup Service (OLS4): a plain-text search for "aspirin" doesn't surface aspirin

`www.ebi.ac.uk/ols4/api` is the keyless REST front end EBI now recommends for querying ChEBI
(and every other OBO ontology they host) instead of ChEBI's own legacy SOAP/REST service.

## Shape

- `GET /ols4/api/search?q=<term>&ontology=<id>` → Solr-shaped
  `{"response":{"docs":[...],"numFound","start"},"responseHeader":{"QTime","status"},
  "facet_counts":{...}}`. Each doc carries `iri`, `obo_id` (`CHEBI:NNNNN`), `label`,
  `exact_synonyms`/`related_synonyms`, `description`, `type`.
- `GET /ols4/api/ontologies/{ont}/terms/{double-url-encoded IRI}` fetches one term directly
  by its percent-encoded-twice purl IRI (ChEBI IRIs contain `/` and `:`, so OLS4 requires the
  IRI itself to be URL-encoded before it's placed in the path).

## A relevance surprise: `q=aspirin` does not return aspirin

- `GET /search?q=aspirin&ontology=chebi` → **HTTP 200**, `numFound: 26`. The **top 5** hits
  are `CHEBI:747596 aspirin-triggered resolvin D6(1-)`, `CHEBI:138614 aspirin-triggered
  resolvin D2`, `CHEBI:747578 aspirin-triggered resolvin D5(1-)`, `CHEBI:140208
  aspirin-triggered protectin D1(1-)`, `CHEBI:138615 aspirin-triggered resolvin D3` — five
  obscure lipid-mediator compounds whose names merely *contain* the substring "aspirin"
  ("aspirin-triggered …"), not the canonical entry for aspirin itself (`CHEBI:15365`). Ranking
  favors exact-synonym-list substring density over a label/primary-name match; a client
  taking `docs[0]` as "the" result for a common-name lookup gets the wrong compound.
- An unmatched query (`q=zzznotarealchemical`) → a clean **HTTP 200**,
  `{"response":{"docs":[],"numFound":0,"start":0},"responseHeader":{"QTime":0,"status":0},
  "facet_counts":{...all empty...}}` — well-behaved, no `error` key needed because `numFound`
  already signals it.
- A malformed/nonexistent term IRI at the direct-lookup endpoint → **HTTP 404**,
  `{"status":404,"message":"The requested resource was not found"}`, but with
  `content-disposition: inline;filename=f.txt` on a `content-type: application/json`
  response — an internal filename artifact leaking through on the error path only (not seen
  on the 200 search responses).

## How observed

2026-10-29T00:05:21Z–00:05:25Z, `curl` 8.x, default UA, `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20`, 3
keyless GET calls a few seconds apart.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
