# Datadog: create a Synthetic API test — New Test → New API test

## Steps
1. In the Datadog app, go to the Synthetic Monitoring section.
2. Click "New Test", then select "New API test" (a separate option, "Multistep API test", exists for chained requests).
3. Enter the request method and URL to test.
4. Add request headers, query parameters, or a body as needed.
5. Under "Define request" / "Assertions", add assertions (e.g. status code, response time, body content).
6. Select the "Locations" to run the test from.
7. Set the test frequency and alert conditions under "Define alert conditions".
8. Click "Create" (or "Save Test").

## End state
The test appears in the Synthetic Tests list and begins running from the selected locations on the configured schedule, reporting pass/fail and generating a monitor-style alert on failure per the alert conditions.
