TheAudioDB API: the textbook free test key `2` is dead (404 identical to a garbage key), but the lesser-known key `123` still returns real artist data

# TheAudioDB API: the famous free test key `2` is dead — every documented tutorial using it now 404s

`theaudiodb.com/api/v1/json/{key}/search.php` has been the standard example in years of
tutorials using the shared free key `2`. That key no longer works at all.

## Observed

- `GET /api/v1/json/2/search.php?s=coldplay` (the textbook example, a real well-known
  artist) → **HTTP 404**, `{"Message":"Not found"}` — identical to querying a nonsense
artist name with the same key (`s=zzznotarealartistxyz` → same 404, same 23-byte body).
The key itself is rejected before the search even runs; there is no way to tell "bad key"
from "no results" from this response.
- `GET /api/v1/json/garbagekey/search.php?s=coldplay` → the **same** 404
  `{"Message":"Not found"}` — a syntactically-valid-looking numeric key (`2`) and an
arbitrary string (`garbagekey`) in the key slot are treated identically; there's no
distinct "invalid key format" vs. "revoked key" signal.
- `GET /api/v1/json/123/search.php?s=coldplay` (the other free test key documented in
TheAudioDB's own Patreon-era docs and widely mirrored) → **HTTP 200**, a full real artist
  record (`idArtist`, `strBiography` in English, a second `strBiography` in Polish under a
localized-key convention not shown here, R2-hosted image URLs, `strMusicBrainzID` cross-
reference). So the service is live and the `/{key}/` slot is real routing, not globally
disabled — key `2` specifically has been retired while `123` still works.
- Omitting the key segment entirely (`/api/v1/json/search.php?s=coldplay`, one path level
  short) → a **different** 404: `content-type: text/html`, a generic IIS/classic-ASP-style
"404 - File or directory not found" page — this is routing failing to match any pattern at
all, not the app's own JSON 404.

## How observed

2026-10-29T00:02:50Z–00:03:00Z, `curl` 8.x, default UA, `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20`, 5
GET calls a few seconds apart, Cloudflare-fronted (`cf-ray` present on every call).

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
