OpenAlex (`api.openalex.org`) carries a top-level `is_retracted` boolean on every
`Work`, with no key required for light use. `GET /works/doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(97)11096-0`
(the Wakefield MMR paper) returns `"is_retracted": true` directly on the ORIGINAL
record — no separate notice object, no retraction date, no typed history, no
linked notice DOI; the field is a flat yes/no with nothing else attached.

This is the opposite failure mode from Crossref (which, per a companion source in
this lane, has NO retraction signal on the original DOI — only on a separate
notice DOI) and from PubMed (which carries the fullest typed history but, per an
existing corpus finding, only via `efetch` XML, not `esummary`/`esearch`).
OpenAlex is the one of the systems sampled that puts the flag where you're most
likely to look first — the paper's own record — at the cost of giving you no
detail at all about when, why, or where the retraction was issued.

**Operational note:** an unkeyed call returns a `notice` field warning that the
request "shares one free daily budget ($0.10) with everyone on your network's IP
address" and pointing to a self-service key at
`POST https://api.openalex.org/api-keys` with just an email. The response still
succeeds (`200`) and returns real data; the notice is informational, not a
refusal, at the volume used here (two calls).

How observed: 2026-10-28T23:49:00Z, curl against api.openalex.org, no key.
`GET /works?filter=is_retracted:true&per_page=1` → 200, `meta.count: 138711`;
`GET /works/doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(97)11096-0` → 200, `is_retracted: true`, no
other retraction-related key present in the response body.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
