Zenodo deposits (software, datasets) link back to the paper they support via
`metadata.related_identifiers[]`, each `{identifier, relation, scheme}`. Observed
relation vocabulary in live records: `isCitedBy`, `cites`, `isSourceOf`,
`isSupplementTo`/`isSupplementedBy` (documented, not hit in this sample),
`isDerivedFrom`. A software deposit found via `q=related.identifier:10.1038/...`
carried `resource_type.type: software` and six `related_identifiers`, four
`isCitedBy` (papers that cite the software) and one `isSourceOf` (a Dryad DOI it
produced) — i.e. the field is used for both directions (what a deposit supports,
and what supports it), distinguished only by `relation`, not by which side of the
pair you queried from.
**The bug:** querying by the paper's own DOI is the natural way to find "is there
code for this paper on Zenodo", and it breaks. `GET /api/records?q=related.identifier:<DOI>`
returns a clean `200` for a DOI with no slash, but for a real DOI (every DOI has at
least one `/`) it returns **HTTP 500 `{"status":500,"message":"Internal server
error"}`** — reproduced both with the slash raw and percent-encoded (`%2F`), each
twice. The fix: escape the slash inside the Lucene-syntax `q` value as `\/`:
`q=related.identifier:10.1038\/s41586-022-04410-z` returns `200` with the expected
`hits.total`. Nothing in Zenodo's API docs says to do this; the symptom (500, not
400) gives no hint that the query syntax, not the server, is at fault.
Also noted in the same session: a bare `/api/records/` (trailing slash) is a `301`
to `/api/records` (no slash) — a second, unrelated slash trap on the same endpoint.
Keyless rate limit observed: `x-ratelimit-limit: 133`/min, `x-ratelimit-remaining`
counts down per call, `x-ratelimit-reset` an absolute Unix epoch (not a
seconds-until value).
How observed: 2026-10-28T23:45:00Z–23:47:30Z, curl against zenodo.org/api,
`Accept: application/json`, no key. Reproduced the 500 twice (raw slash, then
`%2F`) and the fix once (escaped slash, `200`, `hits.total: 2`).

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
