# Salesforce Setup: create a validation rule — Object Manager → [object] → Validation Rules → New

## Steps
1. Click the gear icon and select "Setup".
2. Click the "Object Manager" tab and select the target object.
3. Click "Validation Rules" in the left panel.
4. Click "New".
5. Enter a "Rule Name" and optional "Description"; ensure "Active" is checked.
6. In the "Error Condition Formula" box, enter the formula that should trigger the error (click "Check Syntax" to validate it).
7. Under "Error Message", enter the text users will see, and choose "Error Location" ("Top of Page" or a specific "Field").
8. Click "Save".

## End state
The rule appears in the object's Validation Rules list with "Active" checked; a save that matches the error condition is blocked and the configured error message is shown at the chosen location.
