# BOLD Systems API (v4.boldsystems.org) — HTTP 200 "temporarily unavailable" for every query, byte-identical

BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) publishes a legacy public REST API at
`v4.boldsystems.org/index.php/API_Public/*` (`specimen`, `sequence`, …, `format=json`
documented). As of this probe the Public Data Portal is down, but the failure is an
**HTTP 200**, not an outage status.

## Observed

- `GET /index.php/API_Public/specimen?taxon=Bombus%20affinis&format=json` (a real, valid
  species) → **HTTP 200**, `content-type: text/html; charset=utf-8`, **16,132 bytes** of the
  full BOLD marketing/portal HTML page, embedding: `<h3>Systems Offline Notice:</h3>` /
  `BOLD Public Data Portal is temporarily unavailable. Other BOLD Services will continue to
  be functional in the meantime.`
- A nonsense taxon (`Zzznotarealtaxon`), a request with **no parameters at all**, and a
  different endpoint (`API_Public/sequence?taxon=...`) each returned the **exact same
  16,132-byte body** — the three distinct query shapes are indistinguishable from the
  response: this is a maintenance page served ahead of the API router, not an
  application-level answer to any of them (`format=json` is silently ignored; the body is
  HTML, never JSON).
- The newer `boldsystems.org` domain (a WordPress site) 301-redirects
  `/index.php/API_Public/...` to `/API_Public/...` (stripping `index.php`), which then 404s
  under WordPress's own routing (`x-litespeed-tag: fc6_404`) — the API path has no home on
  the new domain at all; `v4.boldsystems.org` is the only host that answers for it, and it
  answers with the outage page.

2026-10-28T23:53:25Z–23:53:38Z, `curl` 8.x, default UA, `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20/25`, 5
keyless GET calls a few seconds apart. Probes: `specimen?taxon=Bombus+affinis&format=json`,
`specimen?taxon=Zzznotarealtaxon&format=json`, `specimen?format=json` (no taxon),
`sequence?taxon=Bombus+affinis` on `v4.boldsystems.org`, and the `index.php` path on
`boldsystems.org` (301 → 404). Not retried past the outage; recorded as observed, not a drop.
