# BIS statistics API (stats.bis.org SDMX RESTful, v1 JSON)

Bank for International Settlements' public statistics are served through a FusionEdge SDMX
RESTful web service. It is fully keyless — no API key, no registration, no `Authorization`
header checked anywhere in these probes.

## Shape

- Base: `https://stats.bis.org/api/v1/`
- Dataflow catalog: `GET /dataflow/{agency}/{resource}/{version}?format=sdmx-json`
  (e.g. `/dataflow/BIS/all/latest`) returns every dataflow (`BIS_REL_CAL`, `WS_CBPOL`, …) as
  SDMX-JSON structure messages (20+ KB for `all`).
- Data: `GET /data/{dataflowId}/{seriesKey}?format=sdmx-json|csv&lastNObservations=N`.
  `seriesKey` is dimension-dot-joined (`D.US` = Frequency=Daily, Reference area=US) — the
dimension order and allowed codes are discoverable only from the dataflow's own structure,
  not from the URL.
- `format=sdmx-json` (default) returns the full SDMX-JSON data message: `data.dataSets[].series`
keyed `"seriesIndex:0"`, observations keyed by index position into
  `structure.dimensions.observation[0].values[]` (so `"0":["3.875",0,0,null]` means
`TIME_PERIOD` index 0). `format=csv` returns a flat, fully denormalized CSV with every
  dimension/attribute as its own column (`UNIT_MEASURE`, `DECIMALS`, `SOURCE_REF`, `TITLE`, …)
and the human-readable `TITLE` attribute repeated on every row.
- Every response carries `content-disposition: inline; filename="<DATAFLOW_ID>.json"` (or
`.csv`) even though it is served inline, not downloaded, plus a session `JSESSIONID` cookie
and a second opaque session cookie — neither is needed on the next call (cookie not sent,
  still 200).
- No rate-limit header of any kind was observed (`x-ratelimit-*`, `retry-after` absent on 7
  calls in ~15s).

## Error shape — HTTP 404 for everything, body tells you which

- Unknown dataflow id (`/data/NOPE_FLOW/D.US`) → **404**,
`{"errors":[{"code":404,"message":"No Dataflow exists for query : ... Maintainable Id:
  NOPE_FLOW ..."}]}`.
- Known dataflow, series key with a reference-area code that dataflow doesn't carry
  (`/data/WS_CBPOL/D.ZZZ`) → also **404**, but a different message:
`{"errors":[{"code":404,"message":"No data for data query against the dataflow:
urn:sdmx:...Dataflow=BIS:WS_CBPOL(1.0)"}]}` — same status code, same envelope shape
(`errors[].code/message`), but "dataflow doesn't exist" and "dataflow exists, key doesn't
match any series" are only distinguishable by reading the message text, not the status.

## How observed

2026-10-28T23:47:02Z–23:47:37Z, `curl` 8.x with the default UA, light-client flags
(`--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20`), 6 GET calls ~a few seconds apart, no key sent, no account
held. Probes: `/api/v2/data/...` (404, old path), `/api/v1/dataflow/BIS/all/latest`,
`/api/v1/data/WS_CBPOL/D.US?lastNObservations=2&format=sdmx-json`, the same with
`format=csv`, and the two 404 cases above.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
