# Vercel: add an environment variable — Project → Settings → Environment Variables

## Steps
1. From the dashboard, select your project.
2. Select "Environment Variables" in the sidebar.
3. Enter the Name (available in code as e.g. `process.env.API_URL`).
4. Enter the Value (encrypted at rest).
5. Select which deployment environment(s) it applies to.
6. Click "Save".

## End state
The variable is listed below the "Add New" form; changes only take effect on new deployments, so the project must be redeployed for the value to apply.
