# AWS Console: enable virtual MFA — IAM console → Users → user → Security Credentials → Assign MFA device
## Steps
1. Open the IAM console → "Users" → select the user.
2. Choose the "Security Credentials" tab; under "Multi-factor authentication (MFA)", choose "Assign MFA device".
3. In the wizard, type a Device name, choose "Authenticator app", choose "Next".
4. In the virtual MFA app, scan the displayed QR code ("Show QR code") or enter the secret key ("Show secret key").
5. On "Set up device", enter the first one-time password into "MFA code 1", wait for the app to generate a new code, enter it into "MFA code 2", then choose "Add MFA".
## End state
The device is attached to the user and required at next console sign-in; submitting the two codes promptly matters because TOTP codes expire quickly and a delayed submission can leave the device out of sync (fixable via a resync procedure).
## Note
The docs now lead with a recommendation to use a passkey or security key for MFA instead of a virtual/TOTP device wherever possible, calling virtual MFA an interim measure.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
