# AWS Console: create a secret — Secrets Manager console → Store a new secret

## Steps
1. Open the Secrets Manager console (console.aws.amazon.com/secretsmanager/).
2. Choose "Store a new secret".
3. On "Choose secret type": pick a database-credential type, or "Other type of secret" for API keys/tokens; enter the value as Key/value pairs or Plaintext (up to 65,536 bytes); choose an Encryption key (aws/secretsmanager for most cases); choose "Next".
4. On "Configure secret": enter a Secret name and Description, optional Tags and resource policy, optional Replicate secret; choose "Next".
5. On "Configure rotation": optionally turn on automatic rotation (can be left off and enabled later); choose "Next".
6. On "Review": review the details and choose "Store".

## End state
The secret is listed in the Secrets Manager console (use its refresh button if it doesn't appear immediately); Secrets Manager logs a CloudTrail event for the creation.
