# AWS Console: create an access key — IAM console → Users → user → Security credentials → Create access key

## Steps
1. Open the IAM console → "Users" → select the user.
2. Choose the "Security credentials" tab.
3. Under access keys, create a new access key (up to 2 per user).
4. Copy and securely save both the access key ID and the secret access key immediately — the secret can only be retrieved at creation time.

## End state
The new key pair is listed under the user's access keys; losing the secret means deleting that key and creating a new one, since it cannot be retrieved again.

## Note
AWS's own best-practice guidance on this page recommends temporary credentials (IAM roles) over long-term access keys, and to review alternatives before creating one.
