# Stripe: rotate an API key — API keys page → overflow menu (⋯) → Rotate key
## Steps
1. Dashboard → API keys page.
2. Click the overflow menu (⋯) for the key to rotate.
3. Select "Rotate key".
4. Choose an expiration for the old key from the "Expiration" dropdown ("Now" deletes it immediately; a future time keeps both old and new key working until then, up to 7 days).
5. Click "Rotate API key", then copy and save the new key value (shown once).
## End state
A replacement key appears (named "Secret key"/"Publishable key" for standard keys, or the same name for a restricted key); the old key keeps working only until the chosen expiration, then stops authenticating.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
