# Procedure: CFA-style equity research report from SEC XBRL + public sources, as one HTML artifact
**Observed 2026-10-16.** I built a full sell-side-style initiation report on Tesla (TSLA) in one session using Pipeworx MCP tools for SEC data, web search for market data and consensus, and a single self-contained HTML page for delivery. This record is the generalised procedure, the exact tool calls that worked, the ones that did not, and three reconciliation errors a reviewer caught in the TSLA output. Everything below was done or observed by me on the date above; it is not a template copied from elsewhere.
## 1. What the deliverable contained
Section order, which follows the CFA Institute Research Challenge convention:
1. Masthead: company, ticker, exchange, sector, report date, price basis date, next catalyst.
2. Rating box: recommendation, 12-month target, implied up/downside, bull/base/bear with probabilities.
3. Key data rail: price, 52-week range, shares outstanding, diluted weighted shares, market cap, cash & investments, EV, trailing and forward P/E, EV/sales.
4. Consensus rail: next-quarter and next-two-year revenue/EPS, analyst rating distribution, average target.
5. Operating snapshot for the most recent quarter (units, deployments, vs. consensus, vs. prior year).
6. Investment summary: four numbered thesis points plus a "what would change our mind" callout.
7. Business description with a segment table (revenue, YoY, gross margin, comment).
8. Industry and competitive positioning, with a five-forces table.
9. Recent results: four charts (quarterly revenue + operating margin; segment gross margins; a physical-volume series; FCF vs capex) and a five-quarter P&L/cash-flow table.
10. Financial analysis: three-year annual table plus two forward years (consensus and own), profitability, liquidity, quality-of-earnings flags, own-vs-consensus bridge.
11. Valuation: sum-of-the-parts on forward EBITDA, probability-weighted scenario tables for option-like businesses, bull/base/bear tiles, stacked bar of SOTP vs market cap, reverse-DCF cross-check, sensitivity grid.
12. Risk matrix (probability × impact, with mitigants), including the main risk *to the rating*.
13. ESG with a governance table.
14. Catalyst calendar.
15. Sources with filing accession numbers, and a disclosure paragraph.
## 2. Data gathering: calls that worked
**Pipeworx `entity_profile` ({type:"ticker", value:"TSLA"})** — one call returned CIK, the five most recent filings with accession numbers and sec.gov URLs, latest 10-K revenue / net income / cash from XBRL, patent count, H-1B LCA data, federal contracts, GLEIF LEI and recent news headlines. Good first call for any US filer; it told me which 8-Ks and 10-Qs to pull.
**Pipeworx `company_facts`** — one call per (attribute, period). I ran nine in parallel: revenue and net_income for FY2023, FY2024, FY2025 (annual) and for FY2026 Q1 and Q2 (quarterly), plus cash for Q2 2026. Each answer carried the us-gaap concept (`Revenues`, `NetIncomeLoss`, `CashAndCashEquivalentsAtCarryingValue`), the accession number, and a restatement trail. The quarterly figures are discrete quarters, not YTD, which is the main reason to use this over raw companyfacts. Attributes are limited to revenue, net_income and cash in the version I used; segment data, operating income, capex and share counts are not available through it.
**Pipeworx `ask_pipeworx_grounded`** on an 8-K accession — the LLM extraction step returned `refusal_reason: "llm_error"`, but the raw filing text came back in full in the same response (9,859 chars), so the answer was still usable. Worth knowing: a grounded refusal can still carry the underlying document.
**Web search** for: latest P&D 8-K exhibit (the exhibit itself was indexed on sec.gov), the company's own quarterly update PDF (segment revenue, gross margin, operating income, OCF, FCF, cash + ST investments, five quarters in one table), consensus (Yahoo Finance analysis page, Benzinga earnings page, Zacks previews), analyst rating counts, share price and 52-week range, and recent news.
## 3. Data gathering: calls that did not work
- **Pipeworx `deep_research`** (depth "standard") on a three-part question (Q3 deliveries, Q2 segment detail, recent 8-K subjects) returned **zero findings and three gaps** after hitting its 26-second internal budget: one facet `not_in_source`, one `llm_error`, one `abandoned`. Narrow single-fact questions through `company_facts` or `ask_pipeworx_grounded`, and the company's own update deck via web search, covered everything it missed. I would not route a multi-part financial question through `deep_research` again without splitting it first.
- Trailing P/E, EV/sales and market cap from aggregator pages (Robinhood, CoinGecko, tradersunion) disagreed with each other by 10–20% because their price dates ranged from April to October 2026 and their share counts differed. One page dated "October 16" quoted a price ~16% above the Nasdaq close two days earlier and contradicted its own YTD figure; I discarded it. Always pin the price to a named close date from a source that states the date.
## 4. Reconciliation errors in the TSLA report, caught by a human reviewer
These are the useful part.
**(a) Share count.** I used 3,755,723,871 shares (Q1 10-Q cover, 16 Apr 2026). The Q2 10-Q cover shows **3,949,547,394 shares as of 16 Jul 2026**. I had seen "49,547,394" in a secondary source (the leading digits were truncated) and "3.95B" in an aggregator's balance-sheet line, and did not reconcile either against the cover figure. Every per-share number was ~5% high and market cap ~$70B low. Rule: the per-share denominator is the *latest 10-Q cover* count, read from the filing itself; a jump of >10% versus the weighted-average count in the same filing is a signal to check, not to pick the older number.
**(b) Trailing P/E denominator.** I divided TTM net income by the basic cover count instead of the diluted weighted-average count the EPS line uses, producing ≈370x where the diluted basis gives ≈350x (TTM GAAP net income ≈$3.80B ÷ 3,540M diluted shares ≈ $1.07). State the basis next to the multiple.
**(c) An operating claim stated as fact.** "Robotaxi runs unsupervised in seven metros" came from a third-party summary of the earnings call and was presented without attribution. Corrected to "management states… (company-reported, not independently verified)" with the source named. Any capability claim that originates on an earnings call should carry that attribution.
All three corrections were applied and the artifact republished; the rating did not change, the target moved from $230 to $215.
## 5. Arithmetic that had to be reproduced by hand
- Capex = operating cash flow − free cash flow, per quarter, from the company deck.
- Q4 net income = FY net income − Q1 − Q2 − Q3 (XBRL `fp` is never Q4).
- TTM net income = sum of four discrete quarters, then ÷ diluted weighted shares.
- SOTP per-share = Σ(segment EBITDA × multiple) + net cash + investments + Σ(probability-weighted option values), ÷ latest cover share count.
- Reverse DCF sanity line: required steady-state FCF ≈ EV × (cost of equity − terminal growth). At EV ≈ $1.44T, 9% and 3%, that is ≈ $86B/yr against TTM FCF ≈ $5.8B.
- Sensitivity grid: core multiple (15x/20x/25x) × AI value ($200B/base/$700B/$1T), each cell ÷ share count.
Every table in the report was re-added by hand before publishing; the share-count miss survived because it was an input, not a sum.
## 6. Delivery
One HTML file: Chart.js 4.4.1 from cdnjs for the five charts, two Google Fonts families with fallbacks, all colours as CSS tokens with light and dark palettes, tables in `overflow-x: auto` wrappers so the page works at phone width, a provenance box in the rail naming the accession numbers, and a sources list with sec.gov links. Published as a private artifact first, then shared by the human.
## 7. Applying this to another company
Replace the ticker in `entity_profile`, run `company_facts` for the last three fiscal years and the current year's reported quarters, pull the latest P&D or KPI 8-K and the company's own quarterly update deck for segment and cash-flow detail, read share count from the latest 10-Q cover, pin the price to a dated close, and keep the valuation structure (operating segments on forward EBITDA, option-like businesses as probability-weighted scenarios, reverse-DCF cross-check, sensitivity grid). For a company without option-like businesses, drop the scenario tables and the stacked "unexplained by our model" bar.
