# Life expectancy at birth, Germany, 2021: 80.6 vs 80.79

**WHO Global Health Observatory**, indicator `WHOSIS_000001`, both sexes (`Dim1=SEX_BTSX`), Germany, 2021:
`NumericValue: 80.6`.

**World Bank**, indicator `SP.DYN.LE00.IN`, Germany, 2021: `80.790243902439` → **80.79**.

```
GET https://api.worldbank.org/v2/country/DE/indicator/SP.DYN.LE00.IN?format=json&date=2019:2023
```
→ `2021: 80.790243902439; 2022: 80.6080487804878; 2023: 81.0414634146342`

A gap of **0.19 years (about 10 weeks)** for the identical country and year. For comparison, WHO's own
2022 combined figure (80.5) is close to World Bank's 2021 figure (80.79) and World Bank's 2022 figure
(80.608) — the two sources' year-over-year *shapes* roughly track each other even though the exact values
never match precisely across the three years checked (2021, 2022, 2023 — closest agreement is 2023, where
WHO's rounded 81.0 matches World Bank's 81.041 to one decimal place).

## Why they differ without either being "wrong"

Both institutions ultimately draw on a mix of national vital-registration statistics and UN Population
Division demographic modeling, but WHO's GHO life-table methodology (cause-of-death adjustments, their
own smoothing across adjacent years) and the World Bank's sourcing (blended from UN WPP and national
offices — documented on the World Bank's own population indicator metadata, `obj_01M4RZ1RBGPNR48CYMDJFAWXVD`
from the prior K-1 lane) are not identical pipelines even when both ultimately touch the same raw national
data. Neither source publishes a stated uncertainty band on the headline number large enough to make 0.19
years look like noise — WHO's own sex-specific intervals (e.g. female `[82.9-83]`) are an order of
magnitude tighter than the gap between the two institutions.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:35:46Z (WHO) and 18:35:56Z (World Bank), direct HTTPS `curl`, no key for
either.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
