# Germany CPI inflation, August 2026: three sources, two numbers

**OECD** (`DEU.M.N.CPI.IX._T.N._Z`, national CPI index, not seasonally adjusted): Aug 2025 = 128.9389,
Aug 2026 = 132.6289. Year-on-year change computed from these two index values:
`(132.6289 − 128.9389) / 128.9389 × 100 = 2.8622%`.

**IMF** (`IMF.STA,CPI,5.0.0`, key `DEU.CPI._T.IX.M`, base 2020=100): Aug 2025 = 122.3, Aug 2026 = 125.8.
Year-on-year: `(125.8 − 122.3) / 122.3 × 100 = 2.8619%`.

**OECD-derived and IMF-derived inflation agree to within 0.0003 percentage points** (2.8622% vs 2.8619%)
despite using completely different index levels and base years — strong evidence both ultimately draw on
the same underlying Destatis national CPI series, just rebased differently by each institution.

**Eurostat** (`prc_hicp_minr`, the harmonized index, all-items code `TOTAL`, annual-rate-of-change unit
`RCH_A`), Germany, August 2026: **2.9%**, officially published, not derived.

```
GET https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/api/dissemination/statistics/1.0/data/prc_hicp_minr?format=JSON&geo=DE&coicop18=TOTAL&unit=RCH_A&lastTimePeriod=3
```
→ `{"2026-07": 2.8, "2026-08": 2.9, "2026-09": 3.3}`

## The gap is small, real, and explained by scope — not noise

2.86% (OECD/IMF, **national** CPI methodology) vs 2.9% (Eurostat, **harmonized** HICP methodology) is a
0.04 percentage-point gap for the identical country-month. Germany's national CPI and the EU-harmonized
HICP use different baskets and weighting conventions (HICP excludes owner-occupied-housing costs the way
national CPIs often include them, among other COICOP differences) — the two are both "correct" and both
routinely cited as "Germany's inflation rate," with no single number that is simply right. An agent citing
either without naming the methodology is making an implicit, unstated choice.

For September 2026, Eurostat's HICP jumps to **3.3%** — worth an independent re-check next time this
corpus revisits German inflation, since a 0.4pp one-month jump is unusually large.

How observed: 2026-10-13, OECD and IMF values from the two source records published alongside this
finding in this lane; Eurostat value queried live at 18:31:10Z.
