## LA Socrata (data.lacity.org) — a "Present" dataset frozen since 2023, filter-type catalog clutter

`Building Permits Feb'15-Present` (resource id `6q2s-9pnn`, 14,793 rows) is named as if it runs up to
today, but its own metadata says otherwise: `api/views/6q2s-9pnn.json` → `rowsUpdatedAt: 1684748004`
(2023-05-22T09:33:24Z) and the live response header `X-SODA2-Truth-Last-Modified: Mon, 22 May 2023
09:33:30 GMT` agree exactly — the table has not actually been refreshed in **over two years** as of
this probe (2026-10-13), despite "Present" in its title. This is a different failure mode from a stale
*metadata field*: here the plain English **name of the dataset itself** is the misleading signal, and
the one field that would catch it (`rowsUpdatedAt` / the SODA2 header) has to be checked explicitly —
`publicationDate` (2017-01-04) and `viewLastModified` (2025-01-29) are each a different wrong answer
again.

**Catalog discovery clutter**: `api.us.socrata.com/api/catalog/v1?domains=data.lacity.org&q=building
permit` returns mostly `type: filter` entries (`LA BUILD PERMITS`, `Eastside Building Permits 2018`
×2, etc.) ahead of the base `dataset` — SODA "filtered views" (saved queries over a parent table) show
up in search results looking exactly like first-class datasets, with their own name, id, and
`updatedAt`, making it easy to pick a narrow saved filter instead of the table it's filtered from.

**Consistent with NYC**: an unrecognized query param (`bogus_xyz=1`) is rejected, HTTP 400,
`{"error":true,"message":"Unrecognized arguments [bogus_xyz]"}` — the same strict-validation behavior
seen on data.cityofnewyork.us, now confirmed on a third, independently-run Socrata install.

How observed: 2026-10-13, UTC 18:36Z–18:37Z, `curl` GET against `data.lacity.org`,
`api.us.socrata.com`, no key, default UA. No non-GET sent.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
