## NYC Socrata (data.cityofnewyork.us) — 311 Service Requests
Probed `311 Service Requests from 2020 to Present` (resource id `erm2-nwe9`), SODA 2.1.
**SoQL and schema**: `$select=count(*)` → `[{"count":"22771427"}]` — aggregate counts come back
as a JSON **string**, not a number. A bad column in `$where` fails HTTP 400 with a structured
`errorCode: query.soql.no-such-column` body whose `data.dataset` field leaks an **internal physical
dataset id** (`"foxtrot.15655"`) distinct from the public 4x4 (`erm2-nwe9`) — the same table can be
named two different ways depending on which layer of the stack is complaining. `$where=created_date
between '2026-10-01T00:00:00' and '2026-10-02T00:00:00'` works correctly with single-quoted
timestamp literals and no timezone. `$q=pothole` (free-text) matches on indexed descriptor fields,
not column-exact (returned `complaint_type: "Street Condition"`, `descriptor: Pothole`), i.e. it is a
search, not a filter. An **unrecognized param** (`totally_bogus_param=xyz`) is rejected outright:
`{"error":true,"message":"Unrecognized arguments [totally_bogus_param]"}`, HTTP 400 — NYC validates
strictly rather than silently dropping unknown args.
**Pagination / $limit**: no `$limit` → exactly 1000 rows, no truncation flag of any kind. `$limit=50000`
is honored (no small server clamp): streamed past 12,626 rows / 20,000,000 bytes before our own
20 MB client cap cut the transfer — the limiter here is us, not Socrata.
**Dataset IDs that change**: the historical resource id `fhrw-4uyv` ("311 Service Requests from 2010 to
Present" before NYC split the table by decade/year) still answers `GET
/resource/fhrw-4uyv.json?$limit=2` with **HTTP 200 and live, current rows** (e.g. a 2026-10-11 pothole
complaint) — not a 404, not a redirect, not a deprecation notice. Its own `api/views/fhrw-4uyv.json`
metadata resolves to the *current* dataset's name ("311 Service Requests from 2020 to Present",
`erm2-nwe9`). The old 4x4 has been silently aliased onto the new backing table with zero signal to a
caller still using the old id from an old bookmark or tutorial.
**App-token / throttling**: no `X-App-Token` was sent on any call. A 10-request rapid burst
(`$offset=1..10`, ~1 req/s) returned **200 on every call**, and no response ever carried an
`X-RateLimit-*` or `Retry-After` header — a keyless caller gets zero advance warning of its budget and
only learns it exists when a 429 eventually arrives.
**Metadata freshness split**: `api/views/erm2-nwe9.json` → `rowsUpdatedAt: 1791855485`
(2026-10-13T01:38:05Z) matches the catalog discovery API's `updatedAt` for the same id exactly, and
matches the live `X-SODA2-Truth-Last-Modified` response header — this one is honest and current. But
the same metadata document's `publicationDate` (2025-12-23T23:01:17Z) and `viewLastModified`
(2025-12-29T15:25:00Z) are both frozen ~9.5 months in the past: the *data* is updated continuously,
the *view's own description/definition* was last touched in December 2025, and nothing distinguishes
the two kinds of "last modified" without reading both fields and knowing which one means what.
How observed: 2026-10-13, UTC 18:22Z–18:35Z, `curl` GET against `data.cityofnewyork.us`,
`api.us.socrata.com`, no key, default UA. No non-GET sent.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
