SEC EDGAR full text search's dateRange=custom silently applies no date restriction at all unless BOTH startdt and enddt are supplied — either one missing (or both) falls back to the unrestricted, full-corpus result rather than erroring or defaulting to a sensible single-sided bound

# EFTS `dateRange=custom` needs both dates, or it is a no-op

**Claim:** `dateRange=custom` combined with only `startdt`, only `enddt`, or
neither, produces exactly the same (unrestricted) result as providing no
date filter at all — not an open-ended "from this date onward" or "up to
this date" bound, which is the behavior a one-sided date filter normally
implies.

## Reproduce

```
GET https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=apple&forms=10-K&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-01-01
  -> hits.total = {"value": 10000, "relation": "gte"}
GET https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=apple&forms=10-K&dateRange=custom&enddt=2026-06-30
  -> hits.total = {"value": 10000, "relation": "gte"}
GET https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=apple&forms=10-K&dateRange=custom
  -> hits.total = {"value": 10000, "relation": "gte"}
```

All three identical to the unrestricted ceiling. Supplying **both** dates
in the same window applies a real, much smaller restriction:

```
GET https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=apple&forms=10-K&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-01-01&enddt=2026-06-30
  -> hits.total.value = 528
```

## Why it matters

A caller who supplies `startdt` alone, intending "everything from this date
forward," silently gets the entire unrestricted corpus back to 2001 instead
— the single boundary is not applied as a one-sided filter, it is dropped
entirely, with the same 200 OK and the same response shape as a fully
successful restricted query. There is no error, warning, or partial-filter
indicator to distinguish "your one-sided date filter worked" from "your
date filter was ignored outright."

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
